Incremental Speech Translation: A Layered Chart Approach
نویسنده
چکیده
Human speech understanding works incrementally. We begin to process acoustic input before the speaker's utterance has ended. A system capable of performing sophisticated communication in a natural dialogue or simultaneous interpreting, has to work incrementally, too. The architecture of such a system should be modular, uniform and integrated. We present an architectural framework that suits these three requirements by implementing layered charts, a multipurpose data structure intended to represent several competing hypotheses about linguistic content of utterance intervals based on hypergraphs. We demonstrate the feasibility by presenting results from an actual interpreting system.

A Finite Volume Formulation for the Elasto-Plastic Analysis of Rectangular Mindlin-Reissner Plates, a Non-Layered Approach
This paper extends the previous work of authors and presents a non-layered Finite Volume formulation for the elasto-plastic analysis of Mindlin-Reissner plates. The incremental algorithm of the elasto-plastic solution procedure is shown in detail. The performance of the formulation is examined by analyzing of plates with different boundary conditions and loading types. The results are illustrat...
متن کاملLattice Parsing to Integrate Speech Recognition and Rule-Based Machine Translation
In this paper, we present a novel approach to integrate speech recognition and rulebased machine translation by lattice parsing. The presented approach is hybrid in two senses. First, it combines structural and statistical methods for language modeling task. Second, it employs a chart parser which utilizes manually created syntax rules in addition to scores obtained after statistical processing...
متن کاملLayered Charts for Speech Translation
We are going to present an architecture for natural language processing systems especially designed for spontaneous speech. We introduce the notion of a layered chart for information separation and information hiding. Complex distributed systems can be built using this approach which do not rely on a central data structure or control model. We describe a typed feature formalism with appropriate...
متن کاملReal-time Incremental Speech-to-Speech Translation of Dialogs
In a conventional telephone conversation between two speakers of the same language, the interaction is real-time and the speakers process the information stream incrementally. In this work, we address the problem of incremental speech-to-speech translation (S2S) that enables cross-lingual communication between two remote participants over a telephone. We investigate the problem in a novel real-...
متن کاملRefinement-Based Requirements Modeling Using TriggeredMessage Sequence Charts
Triggered Message Sequence Charts (TMSCs) are a visual, mathematically precise notation for capturing system requirements as conditional and partial scenarios. This paper shows how TMSCs may be used to formalize two different requirements modeling methodologies. The first approach combines prescriptive (“do this”) and constraintbased (“don’t do that”) requirements within a single specification;...
